Su-Chin Chen, 97, of Clackamas, Oregon, passed away peacefully on October 5th, 2016.

She was born in Nanjing, China on February 20th, 1920. During the Japanese occupation of China amidst World War Two, she stopped her studies to work at the American Red Cross, dutifully helping her country during the war effort.

As part of China's Hui Islamic community, Su-Chin was a faithful and practicing Muslim. She was married to Pin Zan Chen, an officer for the Kuomintang Nationalist Party, also a Chinese Muslim. In 1949, they fled to Taipei, Taiwan to escape communism. She worked briefly as a kindergarten teacher before raising their seven children. Due to China's period of strict communism, it would be more than thirty years until she was able to contact or see her family again.

Su-Chin moved to Gladstone, Oregon during the early 1980's, where she proudly helped to raise her numerous grandchildren. Su-Chin was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother. She will forever be remembered for the tremendous sacrifices and contributions she made for her family, and the lessons she taught us about the virtues of hard work and kindness to others.

She is survived by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her memorial services were held at The Islamic Center of Portland and Lincoln Memorial Park on October 7th.

Arrangements under the direction of Young's Funeral Home, Tigard, OR.
